Title: Break your Brain - on the neuroplastic power of sleep and breaks (not only) for musical success.

Abstract: Can we make faster and better (musical) learning progress through sleep? That sounds too good to be true. In our performance-driven society, it is almost frowned upon to have no appointments or goals on the to-do list or to be 'unproductive.' However, sleep is indeed crucial for learning and particularly for motor learning. This talk illustrates how different types of breaks from micro-breaks to longer holidays enhance cognitive, motor and creative functions of the brain. Why is taking a break so important? What happens in the brain during mind-wandering and how can it foster creativity?

The organizer:

"Reatch" is a non-profit organization that defines itself as an "independent think tank for critical scientists and science enthusiasts in Switzerland" and advocates for a science-friendly culture. nanoTalks is a format organized by Reatch, consisting of inspiring short lectures on science, technology, and art, followed by discussions and an apéritif. They are committed to a science-friendly culture in which science and society work hand in hand. Their goal is to promote the scientific leaders of tomorrow and enrich public discourse with fact-based solutions.

Upon the organizers' invitation, I will be giving a presentation on the significance of sleep and breaks for neuroplasticity and learning, not only for musicians.
